Alishba Ki Kahani [“Alishba’s Story” in Urdu]
I’m a second-generation Pakistani-American Sunni Muslim which informs a lot of my work. I was raised by a mom who dragged me to Imran Khan PTI protests and Pakistani cultural mehlas with the Pakistani news (GEO, ARY, DUNYA you name it) being the everyday soundtrack of my home in the suburbs of Dallas for 18 years.
Maybe that’s why I’m so fixated on the intersection of South Asian identity, culture, media & social justice. Exploring beyond the aesthetics of South Asianness, beyond the grand weddings and Bollywood songs but the politics, history and social justice that informs our cultures too. Expanding what it means to be South Asian American. Connecting and reclaiming parts of culture while living in diaspora. Analyzing representation of culture in TV and film. Learning the parts of history not told to us in U.S. education and news headlines. This Instagram account is how I explore that.
